Martha Stewart's magazine and television show often have collecting ideas. I admit I look for them. The recent one I took up is vintage tourist souvenirs including the state and tourist site plates which we use. I like to find places we've visited. I also look for ash trays, boxes, glasses, pictures, etc. and I've found most of my things at thrift stores for a few dollars each.
